Steve Bruce made six changes to the side that started Saturday’s 1-0 win at Dynamo Dresden, with Allan McGregor, Ahmed Elmohamady, Curtis Davies, David Meyler, Robert Koren and Yannick Sagbo all rested.
The game, played at Goslar’s S-Arena in front of approximately 2,000 fans, started slowly as neither side created much in front of goal.
Free kicks were traded between the two teams, as Theuerkauf tested Steve Harper and Robbie Brady hit the bar.
Chances remained at a premium up until half time, when Steve Bruce made six changes to the City side.
The home side took the lead eight minutes into the second half when a cross from the right fell to Boland at the far post. His half-volley across goal was met by Ademi, who tapped home from inside the six-yard box.
Danny Graham had a chance to equalise almost immediately, but after winning the ball well on the edge of the penalty area and beating a defender with a clever turn, his low strike was saved by Davari in the Braunschweig goal.
The home side doubled their lead five minutes from time when substitute Korte headed home Kessel’s cross.
