The Tigers couldn’t get their usual high-energy game going at Anfield as goals from Daniel Agger and Luis Suarez earned a comfortable three points for the home side and Bruce had no complaints about the result.
“I don’t think we can complain about the result,” said Bruce.
“The one thing you do need to be when you go to Anfield is fresh and full of life and energy. Unfortunately, the three games in six days took something out of us. We were manful to the end, but a lot of them were running on empty and making mistakes and that comes with tiredness.
“Maybe I look at myself and think ‘should I have freshened it up?’ and made four or five changes but I don’t think we’re at that level yet.
“The first goal was a disaster, conceding from a corner. For all Liverpool’s possession, they’ve ended up scoring from two set-pieces which have come from a couple of mistakes.
“Players were leggy and it became a difficult afternoon. I had players in the changing room afterwards who were struggling to put one foot in front of the other. It’s a difficult ask to play three games in six days at this level, especially when one is against Manchester United and one is against Liverpool in their own back yard.
“It was a little bit too much for us.”
