Stephen Clemence made three changes to the side that won at Preston North End in the Under 21 Premier League Cup. Egyptian striker Gedo was given a run out up front and Conor Henderson and Jack Barlow also came into the side. Matty Dixon, Danny Chambers and Matthew Fletcher dropped out of the starting eleven.
The first chance of the game came the way of the hosts when City lost possession in their own half and Zak Boagey’s pass found Greg Rutherford but he fired over the bar.
Gedo saw a shot blocked for the Tigers but with Hartlepool unable to fully clear their lines Armstrong’s shot was tipped over the bar by Pools keeper Jim Provett.
Nialle Rodney then used his pace to take him clear of the City defence but his shot couldn’t beat Joe Cracknell.
Henderson’s free kick had to be pushed over the bar by Provett before Max Clark sent Armstrong away down the left and from his pull back Paul McElroy fired wide of the target.
Provett had to make a sharp save low to his right to deny Barlow but the Tigers took the lead in the 31st minute. Gedo won possession in the Hartlepool half and his pass found Armstrong to curl a left foot shot round Provett and into the net.
Cracknell preserved the slender lead with a superb save low to his right to turn Jordan Richards’ free kick away for a corner and right on half time Kieran Green’s well struck shot hit Rodney and went out for a goal kick.

Boagey fired high over the bar in the opening minutes of the second period before McElroy’s run down the left gave City a great chance to increase their lead but Gedo put his header just wide of the post.
It was a costly miss as Hartlepool drew level in the 58th minute. Jonny Wright’s cross from the left found Dan Jones unmarked to head over Cracknell and into the net.
Pools substitute Ben Wignall sent a right foot shot past the angle of post and bar before the Tigers best chance to regain the lead fell to Sam Topliss. The right back raced onto Armstrong’s pass but his drive was tipped over the bar by Provett.
