Away Days: Sunderland

16:39 6th February 2014

Travelling to our away game against Sunderland on Saturday? Here's a few pointers....

Date: Saturday 8th February, KO 3pm
Club: Sunderland
Ground: The Sunderland Stadium of Light
Stadium Postcode: SR5 1SU
Telephone: 0871 911 1200

Away supporters are now located in the upper tier of the North Stand, behind one goal, where up to 3,000 fans can be accommodated for league fixtures. Please note that away fans now have to climb plenty of stairs to reach their seat. This has changed since our previous visit, when away fans were located in the south end of the stadium.
Reports suggest there is a fair choice of food on offer on the concourse with rumours of fish & chips and pizza pods accompanying the traditional pies and pasties. Alcohol is also served in the away end.

Adults: £29
Concessions: £10-£19
Matchday Programme: £3

Estimated Car Travel Time from the KC Stadium: 2 hours 30 minutes (M62/A1(M)/A690)
Directions by Car: Leave the A1(M) at junction 62 and take the A690 towards Sunderland. After about eight miles, you will reach a roundabout, at which turn left onto the A19, signposted for the Tyne Tunnel. Stay in the left hand lane and take the second slip road towards Sunderland (signposted Stadium of Light, A1231 Sunderland). This takes you onto a bridge crossing over the River Wear. Turn right onto the A1231 following the signs for Sunderland. Go straight over four roundabouts into Sunderland.
Then go through two sets of traffic lights (keeping in the left hand lane at the second set, going straight on towards Roker rather than the city centre) and you will see the Stadium car park on your right, about a mile after the traffic lights.
Parking: Please note that car parking spaces within the immediate vicinity of the stadium are limited. Suggestions include parking at the Stadium of Light Metro Station (£4) or city centre parking (10-15 minutes walking time).
Park & Ride: The scheme runs from the Sunderland Enterprise Park on Wessington Way (A1231), which is easily accessible from the A19 and is clearly signposted ‘Park and Ride’.
Pick-up and set-down points on the Enterprise Park are clearly marked. The pick-up points from the Enterprise Park are the permanent bus stops, while pick-up points from the stadium are to the north on Keir Hardie Way. Buses run every five minutes before the game and regularly afterwards until all supporters have been transported back to their cars.

Nearest Train Station: Sunderland
Estimated Train Travel Time from Hull: 2 hours 45 mins – 3 hours 30 mins (including a minimum of one change)
The Stadium of Light is a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. Click here for directions.

If you’re looking for a Weatherspoons, you’ll find one on Fawcett Street in the city centre – the William Jameson. Another suggested watering hole is the Harbour View on the seafront (15-20 minute walk) which is also said to welcome away supporters.

Sunderland 4-1 Hull City – Saturday 12th September 2009
Phil Brown’s Tigers suffered a horrible afternoon, despite holding their own in the opening 45 minutes. Kamil Zayatte cancelled out Darren Bent’s early penalty, but the home side ran away with it after the break as Bent, Andy Reid and a Zayatte own goal sent the Tigers home disappointed.
