Matty Fryatt bagged a hat-trick as the Tigers beat Winterton Rangers 6-0 in a pre-season fixture on Monday evening.

A strong City side gained a useful run-out at West Street and were clinical when goal-scoring chances came along.

Sone Aluko and Joe Dudgeon were welcome sights back in a black and amber shirt on a warm evening at West Street.

Sticking with the 3-5-2 system that had served well during 2012/13, the Tigers were soon into their stride with some neat passing football.

Aluko took a heavy early challenge on the edge of the Winterton box in the early moments, but he bounced straight back up and was soon involved in the opening goal in the fifth minute. A ball passed through Aluko’s legs reached David Meyler on the edge of the box and the midfielder picked his spot with a low drive into the corner of the net.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when Matty Fryatt picked up possession 20 yards out and the home goalkeeper was beaten by another low shot into the corner.

Aluko was then denied by the keeper before the chance of a third goal came in the 17th minute when Cameron Stewart was tripped inside the Winterton box. Fryatt stepped up to take the spot kick, but was denied by a fine save from Craig Turner.

City continued to dominate with Aluko seeing a shot fly just wide and Evans being kept out by Turner.

It took until the final moments of the first half for the Tigers’ dominance to translate into more goals.

Aluko’s dangerous corner in the 41st minute wasn’t cleared by the home defence and Fryatt profited at the far post to double his tally for the night.

Moments later, a long ball out of the back sent Evans through on goal and he calmly slotted past Turner to add City’s fourth goal of the night.

Half Time: Tigers 4-0 Winterton

The goals continued to flow at the start of the second half. After a controlled spell of possession, Meyler played a slide-rule pass through for James Armstrong to finish in the 47th minute.

Four minutes later it was 6-0 as Fryatt rounded Turner and rolled the ball into an empty net to complete his hat-trick.

Aluko lasted almost 70 minutes before being replaced by Paul McElroy while Meyler almost doubled his tally for the night with a powerful low shot that was kept out by Turner.

A seventh goal looked likely but Stewart and then Fryatt were denied by a fine double save

Substitute Jack Barlow was kept out at the near post after latching on to a fine deep cross from McElroy and the same two players combined again late on, but pressure from the home defence prevented Barlow from getting a clean strike away.

James Chester’s 30-yarder was on target but kept out while the Tigers’ clean sheet was rarely threatened.
