Eoghan McCawl scored twice as Hull City Juniors came from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory over Scunthorpe United at Ideal Standard on Saturday.

Max Clark returned to the centre of the City defence so Josh Clackstone moved to right back, Jake Rose pushed forward onto the right side of midfield and Will Annan switched to the left side of midfield. Jake Buckle was the player omitted from the starting line up that beat Grimsby Town 6-0 a week earlier.

The two sides went into the game level on points, having won three of their opening four fixtures. The opening quarter of an hour saw neither side create much but the visitors took the lead in the 16th minute. Levi Sutton’s shot was deflected wide and from Hakeeb Adelakun’s corner Taron Hare sent a diving header past Rory Watson at the far post.

Sam O’Connor’s lay off provided McCawl with the Tigers' first chance but he drove a right foot shot over the bar from outside the box.

City drew level in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot. Annan’s run took him into the box and when the ball broke to Devonte Morton he was brought down by Iron full back Jack Bowskin and McCawl slotted his spot kick into the bottom corner.

Zac Cowling saw a left foot shot comfortably held by Watson but the Iron almost went into the break with a lead when Kyle Wootton met Hare’s long throw and Watson was at full stretch to tip his header onto the crossbar.

Half Time: Hull City Juniors 1 Scunthorpe United Juniors 1

O’Connor fired high and wide for the Tigers at the beginning of the second period whilst for the Iron Adelakun cut in from the left and drove a right foot shot straight at Watson.

The crucial goal came in the 67th minute from Leon Dawson’s cross. Scunthorpe left back Connor Smythe headed clear but only as far as McCawl who took one touch to control the ball and then fired a right foot shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box, as City made it two goals from two shots on target.

Cowling fired over as Scunthorpe sought an immediate reply but shots at goal remained at a premium. Watson easily held Adelakun’s free kick before a well worked free kick routine from Clark gave Dan James a shooting opportunity but he couldn’t beat United keeper Patrick Weaver.

Scunthorpe pressed forward in six minutes of added time and won a succession of throw ins which gave Hare the chance to launch his long throws into the City box and from one of them Wootton saw his header land on top of the crossbar.

That was as close as the Iron got to an equaliser as the Tigers claimed the three points.
