The Tigers’ youth team rounded off their pre-season campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Leeds United at the Ideal Standard Academy on Friday morning.
Billy Russell’s side dominated the opening 45 minutes and only a string of fine saves from the visitors’ goalkeeper ensured the scores were level at the break.
However, the goal City’s play fully deserved finally came six minutes into the second half.
Neat link-up play involving Jake Rose, Sam O’Connor and Devonte Morton resulted in the latter being set free on the right and his cross was headed into the bottom corner by Mark Muqai.
Leeds came back into the game after conceding the first goal with Rory Watson twice called upon to preserve the Tigers’ lead before the Whites were handed an opportunity to level the scores from the penalty spot with 15 minutes remaining.
Matty Hinchcliffe was harshly adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box but Watson came to the rescue with a fine save low to his left.
The Tigers sealed the win two minutes from time when substitute Daniel James latched onto Maqai’s perfectly weighted through ball before finding the back of the net with a composed finish.
The U18s begin their 2013/14 Youth Alliance League campaign on Saturday 10th August with a home game against York City.
The fixture will be played at the Ideal Standard Academy training ground with KO at 11am. Admission is free for all.
