Playing against Category 2 Academy opposition, Billy Russell’s side opened the scoring from the penalty spot when Will Annan slotted home from 12 yards after Devonte Morton had been upended in the box.
It was 2-0 just four minutes later thanks to a fine solo effort from Annan. Collecting the ball inside his own half, the young midfielder ran 40 yards before firing a sweet right-foot strike into the bottom corner from 25 yards to give the United goalkeeper no chance whatsoever.
City extended their lead even further five minutes into the second half when half-time substitute Daniel James netted from close-range.
Annan’s initial effort was blocked by the Blades’ defence but James was the quickest to react, sliding in at the back post to guide the ball into the back of the net.
However, the visitors got themselves back into the game four minutes later when they pulled a goal back.
City goalkeeper Joe Walker, who replaced Rory Watson between the posts at half-time, was the busier of the two custodians in the last 30 minutes and he produced a number of fine saves to ensure the Tigers’ two-goal lead remained intact at the full-time whistle.
