Curtis Davies knows he faces a real battle to regain his place in Marco Silva’s side following his recovery from a recent hamstring injury.
Davies was out of action for six weeks before returning to take a spot on the bench for last weekend’s win against Swansea City.
With Michael Dawson also out of action, Harry Maguire and Andrea Ranocchia have formed a good partnership at the heart of the Tigers’ defence and, barring a change in formation, Davies admits he will have to fight for a place in the starting eleven.
“Harry and Andrea have been doing really well in the last few weeks,” said Davies.
“Andrea has settled into English football really quickly. He’s a good defender and comfortable on the ball. He’s an experienced player, he’s captained Inter Milan and played for his country, so I don’t think there is much that can faze him. He’s a great player for us to have here.
“Of course I want to get back into the team as quickly as possible, but I’m also happy to be on the sidelines if the lads are winning games and staying tight at the back.
“You want to play in every game of course, but this isn’t a club where we are selfish. You don’t want bad performances just so the manager might put you back in the team. I’m here for the team and staying in this league is what will make me happy.”
Whoever plays at the back this weekend will face a difficult task as the Tigers take on Everton at Goodison Park.
The Toffees are in excellent form at home and boast one of the Premier League’s top strikers in Romelu Lukaku, but Davies hopes his side can build on last Saturday’s victory over Swansea.
“They’ve got a striker who has got a bit of everything,” said Davies when asked about Lukaku.
“He’s a difficult man to stop. He’s strong, he’s quick and he’s a great finisher. To think that he’s still only 23 and has so much more to come is amazing.
“We’ve got a tough game coming up but last weekend’s win against Swansea was massive for us. It was a good way for us to bounce back after the disappointment at Leicester and we’ll be looking to get a few more wins now.”
