The Tigers’ U23s were knocked out of the Premier League Cup when they were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Liverpool at Bishop Burton on Sunday afternoon in a game that had finished 2-2 after extra time.
Jon Beale made three changes to the side that had beaten Coventry City with Brandon Fleming and Lewis Ritson coming in for Josh Tymon and Brad Maslen-Jones. Ben Hinchliffe also returned to the side after a trialist had been fielded against Coventry.
It was Liverpool who had the early chances with Yan Dhanda playing a free kick short to Connor Randall whose shot was deflected wide and from the resulting corner Sheyi Ojo fired against the outside of the post.
Ojo then had another chance when Marko Grujic’s ball over the top played him in but he dragged his left foot shot across the face of goal and wide of the far post.
The Tigers took the lead in the 19th minute with their first real chance of the game. Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher could only parry Jarrod Bowen’s low drive and Hinchliffe netted the rebound from close range.
Hinchliffe could have added a second just minutes later from Will Annan’s pass but his shot was deflected narrowly wide.
Greg Olley went close before the break but his free kick was pushed away by Kelleher.
The visitors were back on level terms just three minutes after the re-start. Dhanda swung a cross in from the left and skipper Mat Virtue timed his run to perfection to convert from close range.
The first half had been played in intermittent drizzle but by now both teams were having to contend with a heavy downpour. Olley fired a free kick over the bar whilst for Liverpool Toni Gomes was narrowly off target with a couple of left foot strikes.
Charlie Andrew saved comfortably from Ojo before Ellis Barkworth fired high and wide when Liverpool only half cleared a corner. Andrew then produced a good save to deny Grujic with some frantic goal-line defending eventually seeing the ball being cleared.
Good work from Fleming and Annan created a great chance for Johan Ter Horst but he fired straight at Kelleher. Andrew saved again from Ojo but the sides remained deadlocked after 90 minutes.
Liverpool took the lead six minutes into extra time when Ojo crossed fom the left and Gomes fired past Andrew.
Grujic had a chance to increase the lead but fired high over the bar from a great position.
The Tigers drew level in the 102nd minute when Olley’s pass released Luke Lofts and the substitute advanced into the box, side-stepped a defender and coolly fired a right foot shot into the bottom corner.
Beale’s side were desperately unlucky not to regain the lead when Dan Batty’s pass was headed on by Barkworth to Lofts whose low shot beat Kelleher but came back off the base of the post.
The second half of extra time failed to provide any addition to the score and so the tie went to a penalty shoot-out.
It was advantage to the visitors when Kevin Stewart scored the first penalty but Kelleher saved from Annan. Madger Gomes, Toni Gomes and Joe Gomez were all successful from the penalty spot with Robbie McKenzie, Lofts and Hinchliffe replying for the Tigers to give Liverpool a 4-3 advantage. Ojo had the chance to secure victory for Liverpool but his stuttering run up proved to be his undoing as he casually fired over the crossbar. Tyler Hamilton then scored to make it 4-4 and take it to sudden death. Nathan Phillips made it 5-4 in Liverpool’s favour and that proved decisive when Maslen-Jones fired over the bar.
It was a very disappointing end for the Tigers but they could hold their heads high having played their part in a thoroughly entertaining game played in atrocious conditions.
