Tigers Edge Out Stags

21:51 13th March 2013

Cairney and Proschwitz on target for Reserves....

Tom Cairney and Nick Proschwitz were the scorers as Hull City Reserves came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town at North Ferriby on Wednesday night.

It was a relatively experienced side named by Stephen Clemence with Cairney, Proschwitz and Ahmed Fathi coming into the team that beat Hartlepool United 4-0 a week earlier. Ben Gordon, Lewis Clarkson and Johnny Margetts were the players omitted.

City went close early on when Danny Emerton saw a shot pushed round the post by Stags keeper Shane Redmond but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 7th minute. Nick Wright did well on the right and he crossed for Ben Hutchinson to head in from close range.

However, it didn’t take the Tigers long to respond as they were level within three minutes as Cairney’s left foot strike from outside the box took a deflection off a defender to send the ball over Redmond and into the net.

Cairney went close to adding a second with a left foot volley which just cleared the crossbar whilst for the Stags Exodus Geohaghon headed over from a Hutchinson corner.

Seyi Olofinjana fired a right foot shot just wide from outside the box, Cairney’s free kick was deflected through to Redmond and Fran McCaffrey fired over as City pressed for a second but Hutchinson could have netted his second of the game for Mansfield when a free kick fell to him on the edge of the box but he fired over the bar.

Proschwitz was unlucky to see a shot hit the crossbar but when another chance came his way shortly afterwards he drove a left foot shot into the bottom corner to give City the lead in the 43rd minute.

Redmond saved easily from Proschwitz early in the second period before Mansfield had a great chance to equalise.

Louis Briscoe’s cross from the right found Wright totally unmarked at the far post but he volleyed over from a couple of yards out.

A good move involving Emerton, Cairney and Proschwitz created a shooting opportunity for Fathi but he fired over from the edge of the box.

Emerton had a low shot turned for a corner by Redmond before Proschwitz had a couple of late chances for the Tigers. A Fathi pass sent the German through but his shot was blocked by a defender and then he met a Cairney corner with a far post header but he couldn’t beat Redmond.
