Adkins never had the pleasure of including Mason in his side having only taken charge of the Tigers in December, but knows the hard work the 26-year-old had put into trying to make a comeback from the head injury sustained against Chelsea almost 13 months ago.
“We’re all really disappointed for Ryan,” said Adkins.
“The injury happened before my time here, but all I know is that Ryan has worked so hard in the time that I have been here.
“We have fantastic medical and sports science staff here and Ryan has given everything he could to continue with his playing career. He’s taken a lot of medical advice, and the consequences of the injury were so significant that, unfortunately, he has had to retire and that is never nice to see.
“We wish Ryan well for whatever he decides to do in the future and he is always going to be welcome here at Hull City.”
