Robbie McKenzie is another example of how the Club’s youth structure is continuing to bear fruit.
McKenzie joined the Tigers in the U10 age group and has progressed right the way through the ranks, playing as a centre back, a right back and a central midfielder in the Club’s youth and development sides.
Born and raised in Hull, he achieved his dream of playing for the first team early in the 2017/18 season when handed a senior debut for a League Cup tie with Doncaster Rovers, but it was the 2018/19 campaign that was McKenzie’s real breakthrough year.
Again, the League Cup proved to be his starting point when he was named in the side for a first round victory at Sheffield United and a first league appearance followed a week later when he came off the bench in another away win, this time at Rotherham United.
A first Championship start came towards the end of October when McKenzie played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers which proved to be the beginning of an impressive run of form for the Tigers as they began a big climb up the table. A first league outing on home soil came from the bench in a 1-0 home success against West Brom in early November, and the 20-year-old has continued to make regular contributions ever since, more often than not as a centre back.
The opportunity to play and train alongside experienced central defenders like Tommy Elphick and Liam Ridgewell no doubt aided McKenzie’s development during the season, while the defender has been the first to praise the influence of his coaches at Academy level in achieving his first team dream.
