Although he failed to make a first-team appearance for the Foxes, he arrived at the KCOM Stadium with almost 100 career games to his name following loan spells at Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Brentford, Barnsley, Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town.
His first taste of senior football came whilst with Mansfield in League Two, who he joined on loan in January 2015. Elder established himself as regular in the Stags’ side in the second half of the 2014/15 campaign, making 21 appearances.
He then made the step-up to League One joining Peterborough on loan for the first half of the 2015/16 season and added another 21 senior appearances to his career tally in a Posh shirt. It was during his time at London Road that the left-back scored his first professional goal, netting in a 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in October 2015.
The 2016/17 campaign saw the Australian step up into the Championship with a temporary spell at Brentford, during which he made six appearances before a knee injury cut short his time at Griffin Park. He returned to the second tier of English football with Barnsley for the second half of the season, but made just three appearances for the Tykes.
Elder’s most successful loan spell away from the King Power Stadium was undoubtedly whilst with Wigan Athletic in 2017/18. He racked up a total of 33 appearances in all competitions and helped the Latics claim the League One title. Paul Cook’s side kept 15 clean sheets with Elder in the team, averaging only 0.6 goals conceded per game.
Making a return to the Championship with Ipswich Town after making the move to Portman Road on loan in January 2019, Elder featured five times for the Tractor Boys in all competitions last term.
