Long Takes Confidence From Brentford Draw

18 August 2019
George Long believes Hull City can take plenty of confidence from their performance at Brentford.

The Tigers and the Bees shared the spoils in an entertaining contest at Griffin Park after Jarrod Bowen’s opener early in the second half was cancelled out by Ollie Watkins’ 72nd-minute equaliser.

Grant McCann’s side produced what was arguably their best performance of the season so far in the stalemate and – in doing so against one of the Championship’s promotion favourites – Long feels he and his team-mates can be buoyed by their display in the capital.

“It’s a tough place to come because Brentford are a very good side, so we have to take confidence from the way we played and the result,” he said.

“Brentford have been tipped by many to challenge for a top-six spot this season and with that being our aim also, we want to be matching these sorts of teams.

“I thought we applied ourselves really well as a team and we had a really solid game.

“It was a finely balanced 90 minutes. We were on top in the first half but then there was a bit of a momentum swing after the break and they came on strong.

“In saying that though, we had a number of counter-attacks where we could’ve nicked all three points as well. I don’t think we can grumble at coming here and leaving with a point.”

The point gained means the Tigers have now taken four from their opening three games of the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign, which represents a solid start to the season in the opinion of the 26-year-old custodian.

“It’s been a decent start for us this season. We’re all pushing in the same direction and the performances so far have been positive, which have given us a solid platform to build on now going forward.

“We’ve got two big home games coming up next week and, if we can get two wins from those, we’ll be really rolling.

“As a group – we are all working hard for each other and the coaching staff. That’s all we can ask for because that’s what we are – a hard-working and honest group.”

Reflecting on his own performances in the campaign to-date, Long added: “I feel as though I’m performing well but, as with everyone, there’s always room for improvement.

“I’d like to think that I’ve started the season in positive fashion and in good form, but I want to build on that now.

“However, my main focus is purely on helping the team pick up positive results and points in order to climb the table.

“If I can chip in with the odd save here and there, then I’ll be delighted to do so.”
