Lopes Spurred On By Competition For Midfield Places

03 October 2019
Leonardo Da Silva Lopes says the intense competition for midfield places in Grant McCann’s side is driving up performance levels.

Da Silva is one of a number of central players battling for a position in the Head Coach’s plans and knows that there can be no dropping of standards for those wanting to retain a place in the team.

Kevin Stewart, George Honeyman and Daniel Batty have all helped to control things so far this season, with Jackson Irvine operating a little further up the field, while Da Silva has also played his part in the middle of the park with the recent games against Luton Town and Cardiff City, which saw the 20-year-old start in his preferred position for the first time in the Championship.

“I was delighted to start those game, especially in the position that I’m probably most familiar with,” said Da Silva.

“I’ve played in a few different positions since joining the Club in August and, to be honest, I am happy to play wherever the gaffer needs me to but that role I had against Luton and Cardiff is probably my preferred one.

“I had to be patient in waiting for the opportunities and that is because there is so much competition for a place in that area of the field.

“Kevin, ‘Batts’, George, Jackson – they’ve all been great so far this season so you know that, firstly, you have to work so hard in training to get your chance and then you have to be at the top of your game when you do play in order to keep your place.

“We’re all pushing each other to keep increasing performance levels and that is what the gaffer wants. You should never feel comfortable that you’re going to play every week, you need to work hard for your place.”
