Having missed out on automatic promotion with a fourth place finish, Steve Bruce’s side made it to Wembley with a tense semi-final win against Derby County over two legs, while Sheffield Wednesday upset the odds to beat Brighton & Hove Albion who had finished third.
The bookies made the Tigers favourites in the final and they went on to dominate the game with Mo Diamé denied by the woodwork and Abel Hernandez seeing an effort cleared off the line in the best of the first half chances.
Michael Dawson and Andrew Robertson went close after the break before Diame supplied the match-winning moment of magic 18 minutes from time. Picking up a Robert Snodgrass pass, the Senegal international took a touch before curling a magnificent shot into the top corner of the net from 25 yards.
Wednesday threw men forward in the closing stages but there was no way past a resolute defence as the men in black and amber claimed the big prize.
The Tigers team to secure a return to the top-flight of English football that day was: Jakupović, Odubajo, Dawson, Davies, Robertson, Elmohamady, Livermore, Huddlestone, Snodgrass (Clucas 82), Diamé (Maguire 89), Hernández (Meyler 85). Subs Not Used: Kuciak, Bruce, Maloney, Akpom.
