Grant McCann says that the competition for places is good as his Hull City side get set to tackle a tough festive period.
The Tigers’ Head Coach has been able to give opportunities to players in the Emirates FA Cup and Papa John’s Trophy recently, and wants his players to continue to fight for their place in the starting XI.
“Being able to rotate has been important for us, especially with the busy fixture list,” said McCann. “If you think of the Stevenage game and the matches we had after that, it was important that we gave players the opportunity to impress, but also give others a breather.
“We’re playing Saturday, Tuesday and Friday this week and it’s a relentless stretch of games over the Christmas period, so it’s important that we utilise the squad where we can and that will continue into January and February,
“We’ve got a good group of players here and we hope that when they go into these games that they perform and give us a decision to make and they go and take people’s shirts off them, that’s what we want. We want that competition for places.
“I thought there were some good performances against Crewe earlier this week, particularly in defence. I mentioned it after the game but there were some really good defensive performances as a team. We know we can be better in the forward areas, but there are definitely individuals in that game who have given us food for thought and it’s nice to see that people are taking those opportunities.”
