Hull City U18’s were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the Second Round, losing 3-2 against Doncaster Rovers at the KCOM Stadium. Despite goals from Will Jarvis and Josh Hinds, the Tigers were defeated courtesy of a brace from Luca Nelson and a goal from Owan Derrett.
John Anderson and Matt Hare made four changes to the starting eleven that defeated Bristol City 4-3 last time out. Harry Fisk, Harry Lovick, Harry Wallis and Jevon Mills were all replaced by Thomas Macauley, Henry Curtis, Josh Hinds and Jake Leake respectively.
The visitors had the quickest of starts, opening the scoring on five minutes. After the Tigers lost possession inside their own half, Derrett capitalised as he poked his effort into the bottom corner. However, the Tigers equalised just three minutes later. Jarvis regained possession in Doncaster’s final third before placing his shot, from a tight angle, into the far corner.
Doncaster tried to respond through Ethan Bojang, but the midfielder dragged his shot wide, while at the other end, Hinds fired his effort over the bar. It was end-to-end action as Jarvis tested Ben Bottomley from range, while Lewis Cunningham’s free-kick delivery eluded everyone before going narrowly wide past the far post.
The Tigers took the lead just before half-time. Hinds created space for himself with great skill, before rifling his effort past the dive of Bottomley to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, Doncaster equalised within the opening minute. Cunningham’s free-kick was met by Nelson, who guided his header past Macauley to score. The visitors then took the lead just past the hour mark as Macauley parried Derrett’s cross into the path of Nelson who tapped in from close-range.
The Tigers pushed for an equaliser as Jarvis saw his shot well saved by Bottomley, before Hinds fired wide from close-range. Rio Dyer then made an immediate impact coming off the bench after he won a penalty. Oliver Green stepped up, but saw his spot-kick saved by Bottomley, who guessed the correct way, as the Tigers’ FA Youth Cup campaign ended.
