Club captain Richie Smallwood felt that Tuesday night’s 3-0 win at Portman Road was a “big result” for the Tigers.
Goals from Mallik Wilks, Josh Magennis and Tom Eaves secured the three points for Grant McCann’s side, and Smallwood was delighted with the team performance.
“It was quite a big result when you look at the current picture,” said Smallwood. “Ipswich have had a good start to the season and had been in great form at home. To come away from there with a 3-0 win was maybe a bit of a statement from us. It was a good performance and we made it look comfortable in the end, but there’ll be no getting carried away.
“Our organisation and discipline was brilliant on the night. We also know that we have the quality we need in the squad and it’s just about trying to bring that out on a more consistent basis to get more results like the one last Tuesday. The front lads have been working their nuts off and the reward for that is the way they’ve put the chances away in the last few games.”
The Tigers also recorded their eighth clean sheet in 13 League One games, and Smallwood was quick to praise the defence for their contribution so far.
“Our defensive record says a lot and that is where the wins have been coming from,” he said. “We know that if we keep a clean sheet, we have the quality from back to front to create the chances we need to score a goal to win the game. We need to keep that record going if we are to be where we want to be at the end of the season.
“We have to make sure that we keep doing the basics well. You can’t take your foot off the gas in this league because anyone can beat anyone of the day. The right messages will keep going out and we have to keep delivering on game day. If we keep doing all of that, we’re a match for anyone. The minute we stop doing it, we’ll make it difficult for ourselves.”
