Andy Dawson says the focus is on developing players, despite going top of the U23 Professional Development League North, after a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday U23’s.
Max Sheaf’s first-half strike maintained the Tigers’ perfect start to season with victory at the KCOM Stadium.
On the game…
“I’m really pleased for the lads, because they’ve been working hard everyday in training and it’s nice for them to get the reward of everything that we’re telling them as coaching staff with the work ethic. That attitude gets you the rewards, the wins and the clean sheets and as a footballer, it’s a recipe for success.
“We’ve spoken about clean sheet mentality before and I think it’s important for any any footballer. If you understand the importance of it while also being able to score goals, which they’re also doing, it’s a great recipe for success and looking at the team, it mattered to them and you get clean sheets starting from your number nine to your goalkeeper and even with the lads coming on off the bench. It’s all about squad mentality while also everybody striving forward to create chances and score goals and I thought we created some fabulous opportunities and we didn’t quite take them, but if we keep working hard and creating, then we’ll score at some point.”
On first-team members featuring…
“We have to give praise to the experienced lads that came in and they were a fantastic example to everybody that even though it’s classed as U23’s, we said to them that it’s a game of football where you can go and express yourself and show what a good attitude and footballer you are and I thought as a man they did that and that’s credit to everyone involved.
“It’s about having the right attitude and whatever age you are, you come into a ninety minute game of football to win, to perform and to show what you’re all about and maybe we could have scored one or two more goals, but we’re always looking for that little bit more and we’ve got to give them credit, because they gave everything.”
On going top of the U23 PDL North…
“It’s great to be top, but it’s mainly about developing players. We all want to win in every training session and in every drill we do so it does matter, but you have to perform as well, especially the young players as it’s about giving them the platform to go on and express and show what they can do with it , especially with the first team manager and coaching staff all being here and at the moment they’re doing that which is great for everybody.
“We’ve got to keep the momentum going now in the next training session; it’s not the next game. I think if you train hard everyday and have that mentality to succeed individually and collectively, then the game just takes care of itself.”
