Dawson on U23s' Wigan Athletic Victory

23 September 2020

Hull City U23 Joint Manager Andy Dawson says he is pleased with his team’s mentality after a 3-0 away victory against Wigan Athletic.

Goals from Billy Chadwick, Max Sheaf and James Berry maintained the Tigers’ perfect record in the U23 Professional Development League, following a 2-0 opening day victory against Sheffield United at the KCOM Stadium.

On the game…

“I’m delighted with the result. We keep drumming into the team the importance of having resilience and a clean sheet mentality, because I think that’s good to have individually and to know how important it is and I thought we showed as a team that we had that and it meant a lot to them. However, I thought in possession, even though we scored three really good goals, I thought we turned the ball over a lot, but we’ll look into that and review it. We know the quality that we’ve got, but I just didn’t think we did it in the first half or we maybe did get into some areas, but we didn’t receive it right, gave it away on our first touch or we didn’t get the pass right and they’re the little details that players have to learn.

“In the second half, we improved that and that’s why we got into areas to score two good goals from James (Berry) and ‘Sheafy’ (Max Sheaf) and we’re obviously delighted for them, because that’s where the quality has to come from in the final third. That’s why we work everyday to try and become a little bit better and improve, but we can come away and learn from it and we’ll have a look back and we can come away with a clean sheet, which we’ve talked to them all about and the importance of it as a team and individually.

Three different goal scorers…

“We know that we have that quality. When you look at the group, there’s an abundance of talent and quality and inevitably when they get on the pitch, they have to show it and it was pleasing, especially in the second half with ‘Sheafy,’ which was a really good finish, and James has hit the post a few minutes, before his second strike, which was a great finish as well. Billy (Chadwick) has also scored a great goal and it’s about young players learning about doing that more consistently which is probably the challenge from the result today.”

Clean Sheet Mentality…

“We talk a lot about that resilience and mentalities as an individual, whether they are playing for the U18’s, U23’s, first team or going out on loan; if you’ve got that mentality as your go to, I think it’s a great starting block. Even at 3-0, the first thing I heard was the back four say clean sheet mentality and that drives them on and everyone else, because inevitably that’s a big part of an individual and a big part of a team game and that’s the pleasing thing for me, because in possession, we could have done a lot more, but they stuck together and showed that grit and resilience individually and collectively, which for a young player is very important.”
