Docherty Pleased With League Debut

15 September 2020

Greg Docherty reflected on a good day’s work for Hull City following their 2-0 victory over Gillingham on Saturday.

The midfielder made his league debut for the Club following his transfer from Rangers last month, and was delighted with both the result and the performance.

“It was a really positive day for us,” he said. “Gillingham is notoriously one of the hardest grounds in the division to go to. As soon as the fixtures came out we knew it would be a really solid League One opener. We knew that they would try and make things difficult for us but I thought we beat them at their own game really and hats off to the staff for that because they told us exactly what was coming throughout the week leading up to the match.”

“The win could have been by a bigger margin and, with a few more games under our belts, we may well have been out of sight, but we still felt comfortable even at 1-0 and it’s not often you can say that in football. The back four gave us a really solid base and it’s been great to keep clean sheets from trips to Sunderland and Gillingham. That base gives the likes of me and George Honeyman the chance to be brave and support our front three, and that front three were a real handful for the Gillingham defence.”

“That winning mentality is something we need to instil and the Sunderland and Gillingham games need to be built on now. We’ve got that platform and we need to kick-on. We know what the Club went through at the back end of last season but there is a real bounce-back mentality here. The players want to give something back to the fans and we want to get some momentum going.”
