We take a statistical look at Hull City’s penalty shootout victory over Leeds United…

 

Pen Kings

  • Both of this season’s Carabao Cup ties have been won on penalties: 5-4 at Sunderland in round one and 9-8 at Leeds
  • Across the two shootouts, City have converted 14 of their 15 spot-kicks
  • All 15 penalties have had a different taker: Mallik Wilks, Richie Smallwood, Martin Samuelsen, George Honeyman and Keane Lewis-Potter netted against Sunderland; Greg Docherty, Callum Jones, Lewie Coyle, James Scott, Thomas Mayer, Callum Elder, Sean McLoughlin, Billy Chadwick, Dan Batty and Alfie Jones stepped up at Leeds.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Ingram has saved two penalties - one in each shootout - denying the Black Cats' Will Grigg and United's Jamie Shackleton

 

Young Tigers

  • The Tigers’ starting XI had an average age of just 22.9, with Ingram the oldest player at 26 and Lewis-Potter the youngest at 19
  • Callum Jones, born 43 days later than Lewis-Potter, was the youngest City player to feature after coming on as a second-half substitute

 

Debutants

  • Two summer signings made their first competitive appearances in black and amber
  • Hull-born Coyle wore the captain's armband on his Tigers debut
  • Thomas Mayer was introduced at half-time, a day after joining City on a two-year deal

 

Academy Graduates

  • Six academy graduates were named in the matchday squad
  • Batty, the most experienced with 69 City appearances, and Lewis-Potter were handed starts
  • Chadwick and Callum Jones came on in the second half
  • Harvey Cartwright and Jacob Greaves were unused substitutes

 

Ex-Whites

  • Three City starters began their careers at Elland Road
  • Wilks, who made one appearance for Leeds, put the Tigers ahead inside five minutes
  • Batty joined the Whites aged five and converted City’s penultimate penalty
  • Coyle, captain for the night, played 23 times for United before signing for Fleetwood
