McCann: Be More Ruthless

19 September 2020

Grant McCann has called for his Hull City side to show more ruthlessness in front of goal.

The Tigers created an abundance of chances in the midweek Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory at Leeds United, registering 18 attempts on goal.

McCann’s men also racked up 16 efforts in the 2-0 win at Gillingham in their League One season opener.

And while delighted with the number of chances created, the 40-year-old wants his team to convert more of them.

“We know we’ve got a lot to do in the attacking side of the game, in terms of finishing chances and punishing teams," said McCann.

“At Gillingham last week, we should have had four or five goals. We didn’t and we made it a big edgy for ourselves at the end.

“Against Leeds, it was the same sort of thing and we conceded at the end. The message to the players, when we met up again on Thursday morning, was we’d have been absolutely devastated if that had been a league game, to drop two points.

“As it happened, we showed great composure to win the game but if it was a league game we’d have been devastated, so we need to make sure we take our chances.

“We’re creating the chances and I know the boys will take them. It’s just a matter of getting that ruthless edge which I think will come because I feel like we’re getting stronger.”
