An Important Point From A Frantic Game - Magennis

21 April 2021

Josh Magennis says it was important that Hull City took at least a point from a ‘frantic’ encounter with Sunderland on Tuesday night.

A brace from Magennis saw the Tigers twice come from behind to draw 2-2 with their promotion rivals at the KCOM Stadium and, although a win was the aim, the Northern Ireland international felt the draw was still a good result as an eleven-point gap between the two sides was maintained.

“It was a frantic game and it probably had everything barring a red card,” said Magennis.

“At this stage of the season we’re coming up against teams that are fighting for so much, whether it’s survival or like Sunderland going for promotion. There’s so much at stake and our performance in the first 20 minutes last night wasn’t really good enough, certainly compared to the standards we’ve set this season.

“But I think it’s testament to us as a group that we’ve come from a goal down to go on and push the game, and we probably should have won it in the end because we had the chances to do so. It’s disappointing that we didn’t win, but it was huge that we didn’t lose because that might have given Sunderland a foothold.”

For Magennis, his double on the night took him to 17 goals for the season, 16 of which have come in League One. It’s also five in his last five appearances, and the 30-year-old striker says he is loving his football at the moment as tries to fire the Tigers to promotion.

“If I said I wasn’t enjoying my football right now I would be a liar,” Magennis continued.

“When you’re in this kind of form you don’t want games to stop, you just want them to keep coming thick and fast. I’m enjoying it. We’ve got no bad eggs in the squad and I just enjoy being around the place. I’m settled in Hull in terms of living and coming to work, and I enjoy that. I just want that to continue.

“I think most strikers will look at double figures as the minimum target for a season and you want to get there as fast as you can. I got there and then my next target was 15 and I’ve managed to do that, so now my next target is 20. Whether I get there only time will tell but you have to set yourself personal goals and to hit them is lovely.

“However, being part of a winning team is the main thing. It would be pointless to score a load of goals and have a dismal season as a team, so it’s fantastic that the goals and a good season for the team have gone hand in hand."
