Slater Targets Further Starts

1 April 2021

Regan Slater is targeting a more regular place in the Hull City side during the closing weeks of the season.

The midfielder came into the starting eleven for last weekend’s draw with Gillingham and is hoping to keep his place for the Good Friday trip to Crewe Alexandra having played his part in an impressive display against the Gills.

It was the 21-year-old’s first league start since December and he is now eager for more as his season-long loan from Sheffield United heads towards its conclusion.

“It was a shame to see ‘Burkey’ miss last weekend’s game with an injury because he’s been a big part of our season,” said Slater.

“But, from a personal perspective, it gave me an opportunity to come into the side and it was good to be out there. I’ve been waiting patiently for the chance to start a game and so to get that felt good.

“I thought I did alright. Gillingham had the two big lads up front, and I’m not exactly six-foot myself, so that was a good task and I thought we dealt with it well. We dealt with their long ball quite well, too.

“We definitely had lots of chances and I felt that we played well in the game. We created a lot but just couldn’t put the game to bed, but we’ll look to put that right when we go again on Friday.

“It would be nice to keep my place in the side but I know the only way to do that is by keeping my performance levels high. I just want to try and stay in the team between now and the end of the season because that would be good for me.”

Looking ahead to Friday’s game, Slater knows that the Tigers will need to produce another calm display against a Crewe side that likes to get the ball down and play.

“I think the team has been playing really well in recent weeks. We’ve had a very calm approach to things and I think that has been seen in the performances,” Slater added.

“There’s plenty of points to play for this weekend so it would be good to add some to the tally that we have already. Crewe like to play a lot of football so I’m sure it will be a good game.”
