Hare on U18’s Wigan Defeat

20 February 2021

Hull City U18 Assistant Manager Matt Hare says his team needs to be more clinical after a 3-2 defeat against Wigan Athletic.

Despite the Tigers leading the game 2-0, courtesy of goals from Harvey Carew and Will Jarvis, Wigan completed a comeback to seal all three points in the Professional Development League.

On the defeat…

“I think we had a lot of chances, especially in the first half. If we had taken our chances, I think it could have been a different game. Were really disappointed being 2-0 up and not coming away with anything, but thats the harsh reality of football. If you dont take your chances against a good team like Wigan, theyll always be in the game and thats exactly what happened.”

Clinical finishing…

“We was really pleased with the finishing and are happy with the goals scored. However, I think both Harvey (Carew) and Will (Jarvis) could have had a lot more today and that’s what they need to learn; that ruthless edge. So when in a game, we need to make sure they’re not happy with just one finish and when you’re coming away to fixtures where there’s plenty of chances, they’re coming away with two or three goals to their name.”

 Conceded goals…

“One goal has gone straight in from the corner, which is hard to stop, and another goal is an excellent strike from thirty or forty yards out that he has bent into the top corner, but what we can’t afford to do is when they do become on top is just sit so deep. We’ve got to be braver and get higher up the pitch to stop any attacks in the opposition’s half and not just sit deep and try and withstand the pressure, because a good team like Wigan are going to score goals so that was the disappointing thing.

“We now need to move on from this result. We speak about a high press in training and getting to the ball quickly and that’s got to be done all over the park, not just in the final third and it’s something that we’ll continue to work on in training.”
