Hull City U23’s 0-2 Wigan Athletic U23’s: Match Report

19 February 2021

Hull City U23’s suffered a 2-0 defeat against Wigan Athletic in their latest U23 Professional Development League fixture.

Goals in each half from Adam Long and Alex Perry secured the visitors all three points at Bootham Crescent.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made five changes to the starting eleven that defeated Coventry City 1-0 last time out. Several first-team members featured with Thomas Mayer, James Scott and Sean McLoughlin all gaining vital minutes, while Max Clark also made his first appearance in a black and amber shirt since rejoining from Vitesse Arnhem.

It was a fairly even exchange in the opening quarter of an hour between the two sides, as Mayer tested Owen Evans in the Wigan goal with an ambitious lob. In the other goal, Harvey Cartwright denied Sean McGurk, before Billy Chadwick saw his deflected effort saved by Evans.

The Tigers pushed for an opener as both Ahmed Salam and Scott fired chances wide, before the latter forced a good save from Evans moments later. McLoughlin was next to take aim, but he could only guide his header narrowly wide, after meeting Salam’s free-kick delivery at the back post.

Wigan opened the scoring with a minute left to play before stoppage time as Long converted from close-range, after Cartwright initially saved a low cross-shot.

The chances kept coming for the Tigers in the second half as Mayer and Chadwick both wasted good opportunities, before Evans held Scott’s drive.

Despite the Tigers making a triple substitution on the hour mark, Wigan doubled their lead with a well-worked corner routine. The short set-piece created space for Perry to rifle his first-timed shot into the far corner past the outstretched Cartwright.

It was end-to-end action in the closing stages as James Berry forced a great block save from Evans, before Cartwright matched it with a great save of his own to deny McGurk. Chadwick then saw an attempt cleared off the line, before Andy Smith headed over from Salam’s cross.

Wigan did receive a penalty in injury time as Tom Costello was fouled by Cartwright. Costello stepped up, but saw his spot-kick saved by Cartwright as the Tigers suffered defeat.
