George Honeyman has called for Hull City to build on their first victory of 2021.
The Tigers defeated Charlton Athletic at the KCOM Stadium last Saturday, and Honeyman was delighted with not only the result, but the performance too.
But now the midfielder is aiming to kick on and go on another winning run as he and his teammates aim to gain promotion back to the Championship.
“The whole performance against Charlton was pleasing,” said Honeyman. “Our shape and structure as a team was the best it’s been in a few weeks and it felt that way on the pitch. It was pleasing that we’d worked hard on it in training and it showed during the game so fair play to the manager and his staff for that.
“It’s something we’ve got to bear in mind for the rest of the season. We know it’s our foundation to go and produce good results from our shape and hard work for each other.
“The clean sheet mentality along with our desire and shape is something that we should base every performance on, no matter who we play and where we play. We need to keep doing the basics well, and that is something so underestimated in football, and that’s something we’ll demand from each other day in, day out.
“It was obviously nice to come up with an assist from the last game. It was a great ball over by Keane (Lewis-Potter), and then I’ve got to credit ‘Doc’ for his shout really. I’ve heard the shout from that space so I knew it was empty and he’s stuck it right in the top corner. It was a nice team goal that started with us playing out from the back so it was very pleasing to get the second goal and put that game to bed.
The midfielder was also quick to praise midfield partners Richie Smallwood and Greg Docherty and feels the trio have gelled together well since coming together at the beginning of the season.
“I’m very lucky to have Greg and Richie in that midfield with me,” he said. “It’s underestimated what a difference it makes when you get on with your midfield partners in-terms of chemistry on the pitch, and I feel that we’ve got a really good balance in there.
“When the three of us are on the pitch, we’ve got a really good chance of getting results in games. We’ve only been together for three or four months so hopefully that partnership and chemistry only gets stronger.”
