Our Feet Are Firmly On The Ground - Jones

15 March 2021

Alfie Jones says that there is no chance of anybody within the Hull City squad getting carried away by their current league position and insists that feet will remain firmly on the ground.

The Tigers won for the fifth game in a row at the weekend and moved six points clear at the top of Sky Bet League One following a 2-0 victory over Oxford United, although Peterborough United in second place do have three games in hand, and Jones knows the importance of taking things a game at a time.

“There’s no chance of anyone getting carried away by where we are at the moment,” said Jones.

“We’ve all got our feet firmly on the ground. We’ve got ten games left and a lot can happen in this league in that time. It’s about taking each game as it comes as we look to keep picking up results and points.

“We’ve just got to take it game by game. We can’t look too far ahead. The next game is the most important one so we just have to prepare right for that one.

“A big thing in the last five games is that we’ve been a lot more controlled with our performances. We’re not rushing things and we’ve been able to control games through that. It has been an important thing for us so we need to keep focussing on that.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s performance and win, which came courtesy of a Keane Lewis-Potter brace, Jones added:

“It was a solid performance from us. We were resilient and kept another clean sheet, and that gave us the platform for our attacking players to go and do what they do best. Keano was quality and provided that little bit of magic to win the game.

“Oxford started the game well and put a few dangerous crosses in. They play good football and we knew what we were going to face. Their midfielders pick up some good positions that are hard to defend, but we were resilient and saw off the pressure they applied early on and that gave us the platform to push on and get the goals."
