We'll Respect The Point We've Taken - McCann

20 March 2021

Grant McCann felt that Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury Town was a point gained by his Hull City side against a tricky opponent.

The Tigers had to come from behind after going a goal down early in the second half, with Greg Docherty popping up with the equaliser just after the hour mark against one of his former clubs.

“I think we’ve got to respect the point that we’ve taken,” said McCann.

“It’s a tough place to come to and they’re a team that is strong defensively. They get that back five and midfield four behind the ball, and they try to push you into areas that you don’t want to go.

“Performance-wise we weren’t at our best and we won’t hide away from that, but what was pleasing was the fact that we kept going after we had conceded the opener. After we equalised, I felt that there was only one team that was going to go on and win it, but we’ll take the point. I feel as though it’s a point gained because it really is a difficult place to come to.”

Reflecting more on his team’s performance, McCann added:

“We didn’t get forward quickly enough on the transition to get our front three against their back three and it was just a stop-start game with the referee blowing the whistle a lot.

“I’m surprised that their midfield three actually remained on the pitch to be honest with the amount of fouls they committed today. When I watch the game back I’m sure I’ll say the same thing, though. It’s a point gained rather than two dropped.”

The draw means that the Tigers remain three points clear at the top of the Sky Bet League One table, with promotion rivals Peterborough United drawing at Rochdale, and Sunderland and Lincoln City drawing with each other. Posh, the Black Cats and the Imps all have games in hand, and McCann has again stressed the important of taking care of their own business.

“I say all the time that we just have to take care of our own business,” he continued.

“We can’t control what others do, we just have to make sure that we keep picking up the points that we need to get to where we want to get to. Today we’ve added another one to our total."
