Hull City U23s 0-2 Millwall U23s: Match Report

5 May 2021

Hull City U23s suffered defeat in their final Professional Development League fixture of the season, losing 2-0 against Millwall U23s. Goals in each half from Tyrese Briscoe and Nana Boateng condemned the Tigers to defeat at the KCOM Stadium.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made five changes to the starting XI that defeated Colchester United 2-1 last time out. An unnamed trialist came in for Matty Jacob at full-back while Harvey Cartwright, Brandon Fleming, Harry Lovick and Will Jarvis all came into the starting team.

The Tigers had the first opportunity of the game as Jarvis sprinted down the left wing before squaring the ball for Josh Hinds. The striker saw his initial effort blocked, before Joe Wright gathered the loose ball. In the other goal, Cartwright produced a stunning save from point-blank range to deny Sean O’Brien.

Fleming searched for the opener as his low drive tested Wright, before Millwall took the lead. A good run and pass by Boateng released Briscoe through on goal and the striker calmly placed his finish past the onrushing Cartwright.

The Tigers tried to respond as Max Clark saw his free-kick blocked, before the Tigers trialist saw his low shot deflect wide past the post.

In the second half, Cartwright was forced into a smart save to deny Boateng, before at the other end, the Tigers trialist curled a left-footed attempt narrowly wide.

The trialist almost turned provider moments later as his cross found Ahmed Salam, but his headed attempt went wide. The Tigers continued to push for the equaliser late on as Fleming saw his corner delivery punched away by Wright, before from another Fleming set-piece, Salam poked an attempt wide.

As the Tigers committed more men forward, Millwall countered and doubled their lead through a clinical counter-attack. Briscoe flicked the ball through for Boateng who in turn raced into the penalty area, before placing his finish into the bottom corner.
