Matt Ingram says that the memories of a first promotion – and title – of his career will stay with him forever.
Hull City wrapped up the Sky Bet League One title at the weekend with a 3-1 win against Wigan Athletic and goalkeeper Ingram, who has been a key part of a rock-solid defence, says this season forms the highlight of his career so far.
“It feels brilliant,” said Ingram.
“I think the scenes after the game told the story and it’s a massive achievement for us as individuals, for us as a team and for the Club. We’re elated that we’re going back up to the Championship as Champions.
“It’s a first title for me, although I think Richie (Smallwood) is on his third now! In fact, it’s the first promotion of my career, too, so this is a very nice way to do it. It’s certainly the highlight of my career so far and, excuse the pun, but it’ll be one to tell the grandkids about. It’s something that we’ll all remember for the rest of our lives because it is a major milestone for us.
“The one downside to the season has been that we haven’t been able to share it with the fans inside stadiums. I know there were some that came down on Saturday and you could see how much it means to them, and we’ve done this for the fans.”
Ingram has pointed to consistency as being the key factor in what the Tigers have achieved this season, both from the playing group and the coaching staff.
“We’ve consistently scored goals, we’ve consistently kept clean sheets and we’ve been very consistent with our game plans and the way we’ve gone about things,” Ingram continued.
“All of the backroom staff – the gaffer, Cliff Byrne, Tony Pennock, Barry Richardson – everybody deserves a lot of credit for this promotion because they set us up week in, week out to get the job done. Once they set the game-plan it’s up to us as players to go out and deliver it.
“The gaffer has been brilliant to all of us. He has led us, he’s taken the flack for us on the occasions when we’ve maybe not performed to the level we should have done and he deserves this promotion more than most.”
