Get to know our next Sky Bet Championship opponents - Brentford - a little better, with six facts you may not have known about the Bees.
Founded in October 1889, at the Oxford and Cambridge Hotel public house in Brentford – next to Kew Bridge – a meeting was held, between the members of the Brentford Rowing Club, to decide between association football or rugby union, to serve as a winter pursuit for the rowing club and its members. As a result of a vote, by eight votes to five, taken six days later, association football was successful as the sport to partake in.
In 1899, Brentford were found guilty by The Football Association of paying their players, an act common with most leading amateur clubs in London but illegal. As punishment, The FA effectively forced the Club to turn professional. By this time, Brentford were competing in the Southern League - the leading organisation for clubs based in the South of England.
In the Club’s first season in the top flight - in 1935/36 - they finished in fifth place, the highest of any London club, above Arsenal and Chelsea. It remains the Bees’ highest-ever league finish. Attendances at Griffin Park averaged around 25,000 with Brentford enjoying a halcyon period alongside football’s big names.
One of the prouder pieces of silverware in Brentford’s trophy cabinet is the London War Cup which they won in 1942. The competition was introduced to fill the gaping hole left by the cancellation of association football because of the Second World War. The tournament was only held twice and Brentford reached the final on both occasions, losing it to Reading in 1941 before lifting the trophy against Portsmouth in 1942.
Brentford have been runners-up three times in the Football League Trophy (1984/85, 2000/01 & 2010/11) but have never won the competition.
Brentford have entered the play-offs on eight occasions and have never had the glorious day out at Wembley. Tranmere, Huddersfield, Crewe, Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday, Swansea, Yeovil and Middlesbrough have ended their promotion dream.
