On This Day: Goals Galore For Wagstaff

08 October 2018
Ken Wagstaff was in fine goalscoring form on this day in 1966 as he scored four goals to help Hull City record an impressive 4-2 victory over Cardiff City at Ninian Park.

Cliff Britton’s Tigers were the only away winners in Division Two 52 years ago today and condemned their Welsh opponents to an eighth game without a win.

It was the striker’s second quartet of goals in a game in the space of six months – having bagged all four goals in the Tigers’ 4-2 win at Brentford in April 1966 – and saw him take his tally for the 1966/67 season to 12 in 12 games and make him the leading goalscorer in the second tier of English football.

And although the record books suggest that the win was all down to Wagstaff, the striker did receive a little help from his friends in the shape of the following Tiger team: McKechnie, Davidson, Butler, Jarvis, Milner, Simpkin, Henderson, Wagstaff, Chilton, Houghton, Young.
