The Tigers found themselves three down by half time at the KCOM Stadium and although disappointed, Adkins refused to be too harsh on his players after their efforts through the season as a whole.
“We gave some poor goals away today,” said Adkins.
“We started the game brightly enough and tried to hit them on the counter-attack because we know about how expansively they play.
“The first goal comes from a corner and we knew that they would probably try and block a marker off and that leads to McGoldrick getting a free header.
“For the second goal, we’ve allowed McGoldrick too much time and space but to be fair to him it’s a good finish.
“The third goal, they get a throw-in and we need to stay with the man to prevent the cross coming in and then we need to defend the far post.
“All of a sudden it’s 3-0 and it becomes very challenging for us. Although we had a lot of possession of the ball, it was comfortable for Sheffield United. They’ve had four attempts and scored from three of them as the result of some poor defending.
“The lads have given everything this year and credit to them for taking the season this far because they have kept going and kept going and kept going – maybe today was a game too far. It’s a shame, but we’ve got a couple of games to go and we’ll make sure we do what is right for the football club with a mind set for next season.”
