Reaction: Leonid Slutsky On Burton Albion Win

12 August 2017
Head Coach Leonid Slutsky spoke to journalists following the Tigers' 4-1 victory over Burton Albion on Saturday.

Here are the main points from the Head Coach’s post-match press conference and interview with Sky Sports…

On The Game & Performance
“We started the match very well. We scored first and had a lot of chances, but after the first 20 minutes we weren’t so good. We lost control of the ball and control of the match really. We came back strongly in the second half though and, of course, we had a big advantage because they had a man sent-off, a deserved sending-off I think and both challenges were on Jarrod Bowen who was a very active player in the game. We changed our tactics at the break and thankfully improved in the second half. I am very happy with the win and the result, and it was good to get our first win of the season.

“The team is still building – sometimes we play good football but it is still possible for this to break down because we are still building things. We will continue to work hard on this. I know that this is a very difficult league and everything is possible. It is impossible to think you are better than another team. Of course, there are favourites and underdogs, this is the same everywhere, but you know that every match is difficult and any result is possible.”

On Abel Hernandez
“Three goals – an unbelievable performance! He is one of the best strikers in the Championship and I know he scored more than 20 goals in this league two seasons ago. He was very good today and scoring goals is something that is normal for him at this level. He took all three of his goals fantastically well and showed his qualities in front of goal.”

On Kamil Grosicki
“It was his first goal here. He had a lot of attempts, he missed a good chance in the first half. There have been plenty of jokes in training that he scores there and not in serious matches, so we are pleased he has his first one now! Hopefully, this is the start of a good run for him now.”

On Burton Albion
“I watched them on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup against Oldham but I didn’t pick up too much from that because only four players started that game that started today’s game. They played a different formation against us, and different to their first league game, with three central defenders. This was a surprise to us, but we adapted quickly.”

On The Fans
“I am very thankful to our supporters for the way they have supported me from the beginning, and the way they supported my team and I throughout today’s game. It was pleasing to win by the scoreline we did in my first game at the KCOM Stadium and I was delighted that we sent the fans home happy. The fans helped the team to change in the second half after a difficult final 20 minutes at the end of the first half. I hope this support continues throughout the season.”

On The Most Satisfying Aspect of the Day
“Maybe the song the fans sing about me!”

On Taking Four Points From A Possible Six…
“It is a good start from the first two games. Of course, we always want more, but I am happy with our points total. We started the season with a good point away at Aston Villa, and to back that up with three points in our first home was pleasing.”
