Hull City

Ref Watch: Matthew Donohue

09 January 2020
Matthew Donohue will be the man in the middle for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture between Hull City and Fulham.

Having started refereeing aged 14, Donohue gained promotion to the EFL list of assistant referees in 2014. In recent seasons, the Manchester FA official has gone from strength to strength with four successive promotions.

Spending just one season at National League North level and then a year in the National League, he was promoted to the National List of Referees ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Donohue refereed 39 matches during his first season on the EFL circuit and he also acted as the fourth official for the FA Trophy Final between AFC Fylde and Leyton Orient at Wembley.

His impressive rise continued last summer when promoted to the Select Group 2 list of officials, opening the door to refereeing at Championship level. His first game in the second tier was here at the KCOM Stadium, where he took charge of the Tigers’ 2-1 victory over Reading back in August.

Donohue will be assisted by Philip Dermott and Adrian Waters at the weekend, while Samuel Barrott has been appointed as the fourth official.
