In a game which compromised four 30-minute periods, the Tigers started well as neat play from Lewis-Potter created an early chance. The young forward burst into the box before aiming for Tom Eaves, but the striker could only guide his header over the crossbar.
The Tigers’ new recruit was then presented with another opportunity as David Milinkovic broke forward before cutting it back for Eaves, who sliced his effort behind for a goal-kick.
After the first 60 minutes, Grant McCann rotated his side and introduced wingers Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki into the action, and the duo took no time in getting to work.
Following a mix-up at the back, Bowen pounced on the loose ball and darted inside the box, only to be denied by a strong save from Grimsby goalkeeper James McKeown.
The Tigers’ dominance was finally rewarded a few minutes later. Grosicki weaved past two defenders before producing a pin-point cross for Jackson Irvine to rise high and head home from close range to break the deadlock.
And Lewis-Potter doubled the hosts’ lead shortly after following neat play from Bowen. The winger threaded a delightful low ball across the box which was almost prodded home by Nouha Dicko before Lewis-Potter was ready at the back post, slotting the ball into an empty net.
The game was soon put to bed heading into the closing stages of the game as Bowen produced some magic to ease past three Grimsby defenders in the box before finding a wonderful ball to an unmarked Irvine, who needed no second invitation to double his personal tally and complete a dominant display from McCann’s side.
