Slutsky Pleased With Players’ Efforts In Portugal

24 July 2017

Leonid Slutsky was full of praise for his players’ efforts during the Tigers’ ‘successful’ pre-season training camp in Portugal.

The Tigers landed back at Humberside Airport on Sunday afternoon after a 12-day stay in the Algarve, which saw a mixture of training sessions in the intense Portuguese heat along with three pre-season friendly fixtures against Oxford United, Bristol Rovers and Benfica.

Slutsky was delighted with how his players embraced the various challenges that came their way and said: “It was a really successful training camp for us.”

“Thankfully we only had two sessions during our time in Portugal were it was really hot. The other days, it was good weather for training.

“The facilities available to us at the Cascade Resort were first class – very professional – and it was good to work with the players on the training pitch. They have embraced everything we asked them to do.

“We had three good games during our time away – with all three opponents providing us with tough tests, which is exactly what you need during pre-season.

“At the start of pre-season, we were a group of players but the signs are very positive that we are now becoming a team – one unit.”

Slutsky made two additions to his squad whilst in Portugal with the signings of free agent Fraizer Campbell and Kevin Stewart from Liverpool, and the Russian is eyeing more new arrivals ahead of the start of the Championship campaign.

“Fraizer is a really good player and a really addition to squad for us,” added Slutsky. “It is another player for our attacking group.

“Kevin is a dynamic and very versatile player. He can play number six, left-back, right-back. He’s aggressive and he has good technique. He has very good potential.

“Each new player that arrives at the Club does so after serious research. It is not like a lottery. Serious research is done on all of our targets. Sometimes the process can be slow, but that is because we do our homework and we only buy good players.

“It is not easy to buy good players but we will always try to add quality to the squad with all of our new signings.

“I think we will have some more new players come in and finally we will have a good squad, a very serious squad, for the Championship campaign.”
