Talking Points: Grant McCann Press Conference

01 July 2020
Head Coach Grant McCann spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon ahead of tomorrow evening’s televised clash with Middlesbrough at the KCOM Stadium.

Here are the key points from his pre-match press conference:

On the point gained at Birmingham…
I thought we were excellent in the first half. What we set out to do, we delivered. We were a little bit slow coming out at the start of the second half and conceded two sloppy goals. It was nice to see the response from the boys to go 3-2 up but the late equaliser was a killer blow. Yes, everyone was disappointed in the immediate aftermath of the game but we’ve moved from that now. It’s done and dusted and we’re just looking forward to the game tomorrow night.

On facing Middlesbrough…
Middlesbrough had a good result at Stoke last time out. They looked organised. They looked strong, but we know what we’re up against. We know how Neil Warnock sets his teams up. Every manager has a different identity and style of play and there’s no right or wrong one. It will be a completely different game to what we would’ve faced against a Middlesbrough side managed by Jonathan Woodgate but we’re just looking forward to the game. The aim will be to put our game-plan into action and get the result we all want.

On the importance of self-focus…
I’m not bothered about anyone else’s results. We’re only focused on ourselves and what we have to do. We have to make sure we take care of our own business and that’s what we’re about to do. We’ve got seven big games coming up – starting against Middlesbrough tomorrow. The games will come thick and fast after that and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready for them. They’re all big games – and tomorrow is no different. We’re at the business end of the season – albeit a little bit later than expected – and every game is just as important as each other.

On defending as a team…
We don’t just defend as a back four, we defend as a team – always! Our defending starts with the front three and everyone in the side has to buy into their defensive role and responsibilities when we haven’t got the ball. It’s something we have to make sure we get better at.

On Mallik Wilks’ future…
We’re still in talks with Barnsley so, hopefully, we’ll have a bit of news over the next couple of days. Because there’s an option in the contract, there is an extension until, I believe, tomorrow so we’ll maybe know a wee bit more today or tomorrow.
