Jon Beale made five changes to the side that were beaten by Brighton in the Premier League Cup three days earlier. Josh Clackstone, Dan Batty, Tyler Hamiton, Tom Powell and Fergus McAughtrie were all omitted with James Yates, Billy Chadwick, Liam Edwards, Greg Luer and Ben Hinchliffe coming into the starting line-up.
There were few real chances in the opening stages of the game. Robbie McKenzie saw his low shot blocked whilst for the Blades Jake Wright’s header was easily held by Will Mannion and Ben Heneghan’s header landed on the roof of the net.
Luer then got on the end of an Edwards cross but couldn’t get his shot on target and when the same two combined moments later Luer headed wide at the near post.
The best chance of the first half came when Luer escaped down the left and his cross found Edwards arriving at the far post but he fired wide of the target.
At the other end Mannion tipped over Rhys Norrington-Davies’ left foot strike whilst for the Tigers Hinchliffe met a Yates cross from the right but his header was wide of the mark.
The Blades took the lead within four minutes of the re-start. Half time substitute David Brooks created the chance with a great run and his low cross was converted from close range by Jordan Hallam.
The Tigers looked for a reply with Greg Olley firing a left foot shot wide after Luer had laid an Edwards cross into his path. They were then denied an equaliser by the offside flag when Luer netted from Brandon Fleming’s low cross before the visitor’s defence scrambled the ball clear as Blades keeper Hugo Warhurst spilled James Yates’s shot. Fleming pounced on the loose ball but fired his left foot shot wide from outside the box.
The Blades could have doubled their lead when the home side failed to clear a corner but Heneghan lifted his shot over the crossbar.
The Tigers drew level in the 77th minute from a Chadwick corner. Warhurst kept out Olley’s header but Edwards fired in from a couple of yards.
Warhurst easily held a Will Annan header but it was the Blades who snatched a winner in the very last of three added minutes. Brooks latched onto a long ball, beat his marker and lifted his shot past the advancing Mannion into the bottom corner of the net.
