Jon Beale made six changes to the side that was beaten at Queens Park Rangers. Harvey Cartwright took over in goal from Callum Burton whilst Chams Faraji, Brandon Fleming and Danny Lupano all returned to the Tigers defence. Max Sheaf came into the midfield and top scorer Keane Lewis-Potter returned up front. Josh Hesson, Harry Wood, Jacob Greaves, Dan Hawkins and Tom Powell were omitted with all but Wood included on the bench.
A Sheaf free kick flicked on by Ahmed Salam provided Lewis-Potter with the first chance of the game but he lifted his effort over the crossbar under pressure from a Cardiff defender.
Salam had a good chance when he intercepted a pass outside the Cardiff box but his low shot was easily held by Bluebirds keeper Warren Burwood.
The next two chances both came from free kicks awarded just outside the box. Joel Bagan fired narrowly wide for the visitors whilst at the other end Fleming’s effort was just too high.
There were few chances in the remainder of the first period but Cardiff grabbed the decisive goal in the final minute before the break. The Tigers failed to clear a corner and Bagan’s low shot was turned in from close-range by Dan Griffiths.
Chances remained at a premium at the start of the second period. Griffiths sliced a good chance well wide of the post for Cardiff whilst for the Tigers Lewis-Potter’s well struck free kick was held by Burwood.
Cartwright then made a good save high to his right to prevent Bagan’s free kick from finding the back of the net.
The Tigers made a double change in their effort to find an equaliser with Hawkins and Powell replacing Elliot Holmes and Callum Smith.
The visitors had the chance to put the game to bed twelve minutes from time when Aaron Bolger went to ground under Danny Lupano’s challenge inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot and Bolger picked himself to take the spot-kick only to see his effort from 12-yards was well kept out by Harvey Cartwright.
That missed chance looked as though it would prove costly when the Tigers were awarded a penalty of their own four minutes later. Substitute Tom Powell was upended by Warren Burwood but the Cardiff keeper made amends when diving low his right to prevent Billy Chadwick’s powerful spot-kick from finding the back of the net.
Beale’s side had a final chance to claim a point in stoppage time when Fleming and Hawkins combined down the left but Lewis-Potter couldn’t find the target with his right foot shot from the edge of the box.
